Field Experience: Inside the Beehive

$35 per person · 1.5–2 hours

Saturday 21st of November 2026

8.30 am- 10.30 am

Join us at Windy Acres Apiary for a practical demonstration and discussion about what happens during a routine hive inspection.

Ideal for beginner beekeepers and those wanting to learn more, this larger-group session gives you the opportunity to observe real colonies and learn from an experienced beekeeper.

Participants may have opportunity to get hands-on, depending on conditions and group size. If you’d prefer to be more involved up close please choose the Beyond the Basics Class.

We’ll cover:

  • Checking queen health, eggs, larvae and brood patterns

  • Recognising signs of disease and hive health concerns

  • Checking honey and pollen stores

  • Demonstrating a Varroa alcohol wash and discussing treatment options

  • Recording inspection findings and maintaining hive notes

We’ll inspect multiple colonies and may explore traditional Langstroth, Flow, top-bar, cathedral and long Langstroth hives.

Your ticket includes: The in-the-hive class, A tea or coffee after the session, plus time to ask questions and share experiences with other beekeepers.

What to bring: Your own beekeeping suit and gloves. Suit hire can be arranged through Windy Acres Farm.

No hive tools or smokers are required.

Video and photography are welcome.

Booking note: The class takes place onsite at Windy Acres Apiary, Westbrook, Queensland.

Protective clothing is essential, and anyone requiring suit hire should arrange this when booking.

Class capped at 10 people

**Please note careful consideration must be taken when committing and booking this class, as all your materials will be pre purchased once your ticket is purchased. In the event of illness or change of circumstances we encourage you to find a friend to replace you at the workshop and let us know.

In the event of inclement weather we will try to reschedule, however if you are unable to attend the rescheduled date you will be given a credit to spend on another class or on products in store.
